Pear-shaped diamonds are hardly new. Flemish diamond polisher Lodewyk van Berquem pioneered the design within the 15th century after he had invented the Diamond-polishing wheel. The machine allowed him to position facets onto a diamond rough with complete symmetry thereby creating a trail for the later development of complex diamond cuts. In 1475 Lodewyk invented the first pear shaped diamond. Since its inception, cutters have labored hard to work out the perfect ratio of length to width for pear shaped diamonds to optimize their sparkle factor. The quantity of facets however, has remained unchanged since the beginning. Van Bercken established his pear cut diamond with 58 facets and it hasn’t veered from that standard all of these years later.
